SMILES is one of the main Research Lines of the Norte 2020 project Tec4Growth, involving all the 4 centres from the Computer Science cluster and 5 other centres from INESC TEC. This project aims at developing a generic framework to collect, process and actuate on data sourced in the physical world, with smart mobility being the main expected application area. It includes work packages that cover the full life cycle of the information flow, from input to communication, processing and output, as well as transversal concerns such as security and efficiency.

The development of support systems for intelligent mobility, supported by increased data collection and processing in vehicles and the surrounding infrastructure, is one particular case of a more general trend to collect, process and actuate on data sourced in the close physical world. This process should be fast and adapt to, often unpredictable, changes in local conditions. Such goal, and the realization that often local information is more critical to decisions on the local environment (e.g. local road congestion and weather conditions are typically more relevant than more remote information, and require less communication), calls for a decentralized design that offers a viable approach to scalability.

With this goals, this research line is structured by six work packages that cover the life cycle of the information flow, from input to communication, processing and output. The architecture takes into account that processing and feedback can occur either in short loops, with low latency, next to the users and points of collection, or in a wider loop involving data aggregated and processed across the system. Two work packages, security and efficiency, cover concerns that are transversal to all others.

ABOUT SMILES SMILES is one of the main Research Lines of the Norte 2020 project Tec4Growth, involving all the 4 centres from the Computer Science cluster and 5 other centres from INESC TEC.
